In 1909, Ernest Rutherford supervised a landmark investigation at the University of Manchester known as the Gold Foil Experiment. Assisted by Hans Geiger and Ernest Marsden, Rutherford directed a narrow beam of alpha particles toward a remarkably thin sheet of gold leaf. Conventional physics at the time relied on the plum pudding model proposed by J.J. Thomson, which suggested positive and negative charges were uniformly distributed. The team expected the alpha particles to pass through the gold with minimal deflection, maintaining their trajectory without deviation. The experimental results provided a startling contradiction to established theory. While the vast majority of alpha particles passed directly through the foil, approximately 1 in 8,000 particles deflected at extreme angles, and some even bounced directly back toward the source. Rutherford famously observed that this event was as improbable as firing a 15-inch shell at a piece of tissue paper and having it return to strike the shooter. This observation proved that the positive charge was not spread out, but concentrated in a dense, central core. This was a major breakthrough. Rutherford concluded that the atom consisted of a tiny, positively charged nucleus surrounded by vast regions of empty space. This revelation fundamentally dismantled the existing model and paved the way for modern nuclear physics. By 1911, he published his findings, establishing the foundation for the Rutherford model of the atom. His work highlighted the importance of subatomic structure and influenced future scientists like Niels Bohr, who later refined these concepts to describe electron orbits within the revolutionary framework of early quantum mechanics.

The Berlin Airlift began on June 26, 1948, after the Soviet Union blocked all rail, road, and water access to the sectors of Berlin occupied by the United States, United Kingdom, and France. General Lucius D. Clay led the initial response, initiating Operation Vittles to supply over 2 million residents in West Berlin. The Western Allies utilized Tempelhof Airport, Gatow Airport, and Tegel Airport to receive essential goods. This massive logistics challenge required unprecedented coordination between military commands to prevent the city from falling into complete collapse during the blockade. Aircraft crews transported coal, food, and medicine to sustain the population throughout the winter. The United States Air Force and the Royal Air Force flew over 278,000 total flights during the operation. At the peak of activity, planes landed in Berlin every 30 seconds. Pilots such as Gail Halvorsen became symbols of the mission by dropping candy for local children during Operation Little Vittles. The operation maintained a steady flow of supplies, delivering nearly 2.3 million tons of cargo to the besieged city over the course of 15 months of intense logistics work. The Soviet Union ended the blockade on May 12, 1949, acknowledging the success of the aerial resupply effort. The logistical triumph solidified the political standing of the Western Allies and accelerated the formation of the Federal Republic of Germany. Over the course of the operation, 101 fatalities occurred, including 31 Americans and 40 Britons, due to flight accidents. The success of this operation demonstrated the effectiveness of air transport in geopolitical conflicts and remained a defining example of strategic humanitarian relief during the Cold War.
