Zaha Hadid (1950–2016) was an Iraqi-British architect celebrated for her revolutionary contributions to modern design. Born in Baghdad, she studied mathematics in Beirut before moving to London in 1972. She established her own practice, Zaha Hadid Architects, in 1980. Throughout her 36-year career, she transformed architectural geometry, earning global recognition. In 2004, she became the first woman to receive the Pritzker Architecture Prize. Her work often utilized fluid forms, complex spatiality, and experimental digital modeling techniques. Her first major built project, the Vitra Fire Station, was completed in 1993 in Weil am Rhein, Germany, instantly garnering international acclaim. Among her most prominent works is the MAXXI Museum in Rome, Italy, which opened in 2009, and the Guangzhou Opera House in China, completed in 2010. These structures demonstrate her signature style, characterized by sweeping curves and interconnected volumes. The London Aquatics Centre, built for the 2012 Olympic Games, further cemented her reputation for combining athletic function with iconic, organic aesthetics. Hadid was the recipient of 2 Stirling Prizes, receiving them in 2010 and 2011 for her work on the MAXXI Museum and the Evelyn Grace Academy in London. In 2012, she was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II. Even after her death in 2016, her firm continues to oversee the completion of major designs, including the Al Janoub Stadium in Qatar, which opened in 2019. Today, her legacy persists through over 900 projects, influencing 21st-century urban planning and the global landscape of contemporary architecture.

Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer, led the 1519 Spanish expedition to reach the Spice Islands by sailing west. Departing from Seville with a fleet of 5 ships and roughly 270 crew members, the mission sought a direct westward route to the East Indies. The fleet crossed the Atlantic Ocean and spent months searching for a passage around the American continent. In 1520, they discovered the treacherous strait now known as the Strait of Magellan, becoming the first Europeans to enter the Pacific Ocean from the east, a massive feat of maritime discovery. During the expedition, the crew faced starvation, mutiny, and extreme weather. In 1521, Magellan was killed during the Battle of Mactan in the Philippines. Following his death, command shifted to Juan Sebastian Elcano. Only 1 vessel, the Victoria, remained seaworthy enough to complete the journey. It carried a dwindling crew of just 18 survivors across the Indian Ocean and around the Cape of Good Hope, eventually returning to Spain in 1522. This arrival marked the conclusion of the first recorded full circumnavigation of the Earth. The expedition provided the first empirical proof that the world was round and far larger than previously estimated. By documenting the vast distance of the Pacific Ocean, the voyage fundamentally changed global geography. While Magellan did not live to see the end of the trip, his planning enabled the success of the mission. The loss of 4 ships and over 250 men highlighted the immense danger of early exploration. This achievement paved the way for future maritime trade routes and expanded European knowledge of the world.
